Perhaps one of the most trusted sources for all things skincare in the country is Dr. Vicki Belo. She's not only the founder of a world-class medical aesthetic clinic; she's also recognized internationally, even grabbing the award for Beauty Industry Pioneer of the Year back in 2021. So when she tells you to ditch certain beauty trends, there's probably a good reason why.
Why You Should Ditch The Peel-Off Masks In 2023, According to Dr. Vicki Belo
On her TikTok account, the celebrity doctor discussed some skincare practices she considers "pointless." The first one she mentioned was was applying collagen creams. "You cannot increase the amount of collagen in your face by applying it through a cream," she began.
According to her, the collagen molecules are too big to be absorbed into the skin. Drinking collagen supplements or undergoing beauty treatments specifically made to increase collagen production would be more effective.
The second, which may surprise you, was the use of peel-off face masks. "Your skin barrier is going to hate you for this," she said. She explained that although peel-off face masks are effective at removing blackheads, dead skin cells, and other gunk, the excessive pulling can damage the skin barrier. This leaves you with more sensitive skin, making it prone to irritation and damage.
While some netizens appreciated the advice, others were quick to defend their favorite beauty product.
Upon seeing the comments, Dr. Belo responded with another video. "A lot of you really want to continue using peel-off face masks because you say that it removes sebaceous filaments," she says, agreeing that they do indeed remove them.
ICYDK, sebaceous filaments are white strings of dead skin cells and oils that come out of your pores when squeezed. Although, she continues to say that these will only come back in a few days. "It's much better to get to the root of the problem," she stated.
Rather than using peel-off masks that only temporarily solves your skincare problems, Dra. Vicki advises netizens to use AHAs, BHAs (salicylic acid), and tretinoin. These active ingredients have been proven to effectively reduce sebaceous filaments and even prevent newer ones from forming and clogging your pores. The result? Smoother, clearer, and less irritated skin.
