Turn your frown upside down with this simple makeup hack.

For the longest time, pouty plump lips have been considered the beauty standard for its seductive appearance, akin to the likes of Angelina Jolie. But it seems that a new lip trend is making waves on social media: upturned lips, the makeup hack that will turn your pout upside down–literally!

What Are Upturned Lips?

Content creators on Tiktok have been contouring their lips to create a more smiley, upturned curl rather than the typical downward pout. It’s supposed to create the illusion that the person is always smiling, which can also help lift the face to give it a more youthful, livelier appearance.

Like most makeup trends dominating the beauty space these days, this trend was popularized by Korean personalities, with K-pop idols such as Girls' Generation's Taeyeon, Momoland's JooE, and BLACKPINK's Rose being some of the inspirations. In Hallyu land, this particular look is labeled as "ibkkoli," which directly translates to "corner of mouth." One local celebrity who has rocked the upturned lips look is Liza Soberano.

How Can You Achieve the Upturned Lip Look?

There are two ways to achieve this lip trend. The first is by using an eye or lip liner that's the same shade as the concealer, and then drawing four “C”s around the corners of the lips to give them a more lifted look.

The second is by using a nude, brown lip liner to contour the very inner corners of the lips upwards, creating a fake smile.

Different methods might work better depending on someone's natural lip shape, so there's plenty of room to experiment to see what gives the best ibkkoli results. Feel free to combine the two methods, too!
