In the beauty industry, it’s a common misconception that “anti-aging” is aimed at stopping aging from happening altogether. But the truth is, whether we want to or not, people get old. What we’re really trying to do with all these anti-aging beauty products is to keep our skin from aging faster than it should be. And in order to do that, it's important you understand what's causing your skin to age prematurely in the first place. Fortunately, Dr. Vicki Belo has the answers.

The Things That Speed Up Signs of Aging, According to Dr. Vicki Belo

In an Instagram reel, Dra. Vicki Belo reveals the three main things that make our skin age faster: sun, stress, and smoking—also known as the "three S" of aging. Here’s how each affects our skin and what you can do to avoid them:

1. Sun

It’s a well-known fact that the sun is our skin's biggest enemy. It’s the number one cause of a plethora of skin concerns from sun spots all the way to skin cancer. The celebrity doctor reminds us how important it is to wear sunscreen every day. She also suggests retouching at lunch time to protect your skin for the rest of the day.

2. Stress

To quote Dra. Vicki, “There is a mind-body connection and getting stressed will secrete hormones that are going to cause us to have eyebags, wrinkles, and sagging skin.” This is true–the hormone that she’s talking about is cortisol, a.k.a. the stress hormone. As cortisol levels increase, our collagen levels decrease, leading to the loss of skin elasticity.

3. Smoking

ICYDK, there is such a thing as “smoker’s lips.” This is when wrinkles form around the mouth due to the constant pursing of your lips. Not to mention the nicotine decreases blood flow and the level of oxygen around your mouth, which causes discoloration. If you want to delay premature skin aging, quitting smoking can make a huge positive impact.

Remember to avoid these three S and your skin will surely thank you.
