The beauty community on Tiktok has been active for years now, and at this point, the number of beauty hacks we’ve seen is in the thousands. From simple techniques that make their way into our beauty routines (see "clean girl" and Douyin makeup) to those you’d call downright bizarre (don’t get us started on 5-Minute Crafts), you would think that we’ve seen them all by now. That is until we spotted Selena Gomez applying mascara with a pair of tweezers—yes, you read that sentence correctly.

In a TikTok video where the actress shares a "simple quick look," she started applying mascara with a rather unique technique. She pinched her mascara wand with tweezers to transfer product onto its tips, and proceeded to squeeze her lower lash hairs with the mascara-laden tweezers.

Now, with a little more research, we discovered the origins of this mascara hack. It traces back to East-Asian style of makeup, where "idol lashes," a mascara look popularized by K-Pop Idols, reign supreme. The look keeps the main focus on lash separation, keeping the hairs long, well-emphasized, and widely fanned-out. Selena’s version is a more tamed version of the style, where she applies the technique to just the lower lashes.

How to Apply Mascara Like Selena Gomez

Step 1: Choose the right kind of mascara.

For this makeup hack, you need to be particular with your choice of mascara. Because you’re going to transfer the mascara from wand to tweezer, then tweezer to lash hair, you’ll be exposing the formula to a lot of air. You need something that doesn’t set right away and keeps moisture intact as you transfer the product around.

Step 2: Load your tweezers with product.

Hold your wand that's loaded with mascara by the handle, and with the opposite hand, lightly grab some product using a pair of tweezers. Do it with the softest of pinching motions, slowly building up the product on the ends.

Step 3: "Pinch" your lower lashes with the tweezers.

Using the mascara-loaded tweezers, gently pinch some of your lower lash hairs together. This should load your lower lashes with mascara, and clump some hairs together to create the look of one, prominent-looking lash. The end result should look something like small falsies on your lower lashes.

Should you try it?

Although makeup proficiencies vary with every person, the struggle of applying mascara on the lower lashes is arguably universal. Anyone who loves makeup has lived the experience of mascara spilling over to their under eyes in an attempt to coat the lower lashes. We all know what it’s like to have to swipe that stubborn, goopy substance with a cotton bud, all while removing the existing base products, too—a disaster! This beauty hack offers a clever answer to this problem, all while giving you doe-eyed glamour. So aside from the pure convenience, it makes your eyes look amazing—and that’s a good enough reason to try it.
