According to TikTok, this might just be the secret to long-lasting youthful skin.

Over the years, we’ve been introduced to some completely bizarre-sounding beauty treatments that have actually turned out to be quite effective. We've seen everything from snail slime and vampire facials to umbilical cord blood-derived exosomes. These innovative treatments come from all over the globe, but South Korea is currently the hotspot for all things beauty and wellness. One of their latest viral sensations on TikTok is the salmon sperm facial (yes, you read that right), also known as the Rejuran SkinBooster.

What is Rejuran?

At the launch of the Rejuran Philippine Academy, a collaboration between TritanMed Aesthetics and Pharma Research, we were introduced to a program that aims to train top Rejuran injectors in the country to become Master Trainers, Certified Injector Trainers, and Certified Injectors.

Dr. Sandy Chris Tan, TritanMed's Senior Vice President for Research and Development, broke it down for us: "Rejuran is basically fragments of DNA. It's purified under the strictest protocols, and this was derived from the sperm and the testes of wild-caught salmon. Now, this product, when injected into our skin, is seen by our fibroblasts or the cell that produces collagen. It's a signal that tells these cells to produce your own collagen."

Wondering how Rejuran Skinboosters differ from fillers? Dr. Sandy explained, “Unlike fillers, which is a foreign body in your face, there's a big mass on your face. This is different. You inject [the Rejuran] in, your body produces your own collagen. It's yours, right? And the product that we inject disappears after that.”

Benefits of Rejuran Skinbooster

So, what exactly can Rejuran do for your skin? Dr. Sandy listed the benefits:

  • Improves skin elasticity
  • Brightens skin
  • Plumps skin
  • Shrinks pores
  • Improves scars
  • Balances moisture and controls oil
  • Reduces lines and wrinkles
  • Smoothens skin texture

To get the full benefits though, you'll need about two to four sessions. “It's not a one-time go. It's like two or three [sessions]. [Then] for older patients, maybe four,” Dr. Sandy shared.

Does the Rejuran Skinbooster Hurt?

We all have different pain tolerances, but Dr. Sandy assures that the Rejuran needle is one of the finest out there. “The thing is, the needle, the product itself, they did so much research on the product. And I'm so grateful for this because never, ever have I seen a needle that fine and that durable.” Plus, a topical anesthetic is applied before the procedure. Accordingly, doctors at the Rejuran Philippine Academy have developed a method to minimize potential pain during the procedure, which they plan to teach to other Rejuran injectors in the country.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Besides the potential pain (which, again, varies), you might see some bumps and needle marks right after the procedure, but these should disappear in one to two days. Dr. Park Yoon Joon, Vice Chairman of the Korean Association for Laser Dermatology and Trichology, and Dr. Michael Kim, Founder and Medical Director of Aeon Medical Aesthetic Center in Singapore, claims there are no other side effects. Dr. Kim said, “When you do a filler, you know the worst-case scenario is blindness, necrosis. The worst-case scenario for Rejuran could be maybe that the bumps or the redness might last a week. That's the worst-case scenario, but that's very rare in itself.”

Dr. Kim added, “Up to now, more than 10 years of usage in Korea and around the world, there's still no reported case of vascular compromise. So the doctor can be confident in injecting. The patient can also be reassured that they don't have to worry about those types of side effects when they're doing the treatment. I have never heard of any overdose treatment either.”
