For many beauty girls, lip gloss was their gateway to the world of makeup—especially for those born and raised in the '90s or early 2000s.

Back then, we bet nothing could make you feel quite as cool and poppin’ as a glossed-up pout, often achieved with a swipe of cherry ChapStick or the iconic Lancome Juicy Tubes. And while the 2010s may have convinced us to toss out our favorite Lip Smackers in favor of Kylie Jenner-inspired matte lips, it seems we've come full circle: Glossy lips are back, and they're better than ever.

The glossy lip was synonymous with youthful exuberance and effortless style, defining an era with its sheer, shiny finish. Making its triumphant return, the trend is back with a fresh, updated twist that offers advanced formulas, longer-lasting shine, and more sophisticated finishes. This time around, achieving a glossy lip extends beyond traditional lip glosses and balms. The beauty market now offers an array of products such as lip butters, lip oils, lip masks, scrubs, plumpers—you name it—all designed to deliver the smoothest, juiciest lips.

But what has sparked this renewed obsession with the shiny pout, you ask?

Why the Lip Gloss Is Making a Comeback

For starters, beauty trends are notoriously cyclical, so it was only a matter of time before the 2010s matte lip craze gave way to a renewed appreciation for glossy lips. This revival harks back to the '90s and early 2000s when frosted lipsticks and glittery glosses were all the rage. For many, including myself, applying and reapplying lip gloss has become a comforting ritual, deeply rooted in nostalgia. Each swipe of lip gloss excites my inner child.

Then there’s the "Lipstick Effect," an economic theory suggesting that during recessions, economic downturns, or periods of personal financial constraint, consumers continue to indulge in small luxuries. Instead of splurging on high-priced items, people often treat themselves to affordable indulgences, such as lip products, to boost their spirits. While I’m no economist, the abundance of lip products stashed inside my different purses and makeup bags (and probably in yours as well) suggests that there's some truth to the so-called Lipstick Effect. Or, in this case, we can call it the Lip Gloss Effect.

Additionally, lip gloss formulas have significantly improved in recent years. Gone are the days of goopy, thick, and annoyingly sticky formulations. Today's lip glosses offer the same high shine without the mess, providing a more pleasant application and overall experience. These high-shine lip products are often infused with skincare ingredients too, doubling as lip care.
