Why You Should Give the No-Mascara Makeup Trend a Try

Why You Should Give the No-Mascara Makeup Trend a Try Skipping mascara might be the beauty shift you didn’t know you needed.

For many of us, especially if you have naturally straight or barely-there lashes, the idea of skipping mascara might seem unthinkable. I’ll even admit it myself: If I had to choose just one makeup product to use forever, it would be mascara. That was until I came across the no-mascara makeup trend.

According to Instagram user @databutmakeitfashion, mascara’s popularity dropped by 47% in January 2025, based on their analysis of over 300,000 online posts and engagement metrics within just one week.

Surprisingly, this might be the one beauty shift that convinces me (and maybe even you) to embrace the bare-lash look. Plus, if you’re someone who swears by waterproof mascara or regularly gets lash extensions, you know how much your lashes could use a break. Enter the no-mascara trend: a chic, low-maintenance approach to makeup that might just change the way you see your lashes.

What Is the No-Mascara Makeup Trend?

The concept is simple—doing a full face of makeup while leaving your lashes bare. While this technique has been around for years, it’s now making waves again for its ability to shift the focus to the natural structure of your face, creating an unexpectedly polished look.

During Chloé’s Spring/Summer 2024 runway, makeup artist Fara Homidi embraced mascara-free beauty, opting to highlight glowing skin and subtly sculpted features instead.

And, of course, social media is fueling the trend’s resurgence—TikTok and Instagram are filled with beauty influencers and makeup artists showing off their bare-lashed looks.

Take it from Mara Tanchanco of the Preview Clique—trying out makeup trends can widen your beauty horizons. You may be like her in the sense that you also think that a look is incomplete without mascara, but that’s all the more reason to explore!

Mara achieved a laid-back look by going in with a peach corrector and a tinted foundation primer, followed by light contour. For her eyes, she used a shimmery gold eyeshadow and a thin eyeliner. Her brows remained softly filled, while her cheeks and lips gave a cute pop of color.

Apart from a clean look, Mara shared that she could also see how the trend would work with a bold lip. It’s a no-fuss routine that you can always go to, whether it's a busy weekday or a relaxing weekend.

Why Try the No-Mascara Trend?

This trend fits perfectly into the ongoing "skinimalism" movement, where less is more. Celebrities like BLACKPINK’s Jennie, Hailey Bieber, and Sofia Andres have already embraced the no-mascara look, proving that going lash-free can be just as polished and put-together as a full glam moment.

Not to mention, embracing this trend is a great excuse to give your lashes some much-needed TLC, especially if you’re recovering from frequent lash extension appointments or heavy waterproof mascara use. Instead of reaching for a mascara wand, consider nourishing your lashes with a serum and giving them a gentle curl for a naturally lifted effect.
