Think your nails but better.

From the viral “Red Nails Theory” to the trendy blush-inspired manicure, the internet has been obsessed with bright and playful nail trends this 2023. But now that summer is officially coming to a close, the latest trend that’s been sweeping TikTok leans towards a more minimalist than kitschy look.

Introducing—drum roll, please—the "naked nails" trend! Contrary to the flashy nail art you’ve been seeing on your FYP a few weeks back, this aesthetic is all about paring down the color and zeroing on nail care instead. Ahead, we break down everything you need to know about the trend before trying it out for yourself!

What Is the “Naked Nails” Trend?

Following the popularity of quiet luxury and normcore fashion, the minimalist aesthetic has started seeping through the beauty space as well. Earlier this year, international A-listers like Kylie Jenner, Selena Gomez, and Margot Robbie have been rocking natural-looking manicures courtesy of nail artists Tom Bachik and Zola Ganzorigt.

Meanwhile, beauty influencers abroad such as Alix Earle and Tinx have been copping short nails and skipping the polish completely. TikTok creator @sydneyv.nichols then posted a now-viral video of the rising trend, dubbing it “naked nail girl summer.”

Now, it seems like local celebrities have hopped on the bandwagon as well! For example, we recently spotted Sue Ramirez and Kelsey Merritt sporting ultra-chic manicures featuring barely-there polish and perfectly-trimmed nails.

TL;DR: The trend is essentially the nail equivalent of the “no-makeup” makeup look and quiet luxury hair. Think your nails but better!

How to Achieve the “Naked Nails” Trend

The key to pulling off this trend is proper nail care. In the same way that you rely on skincare to forgo foundation, you’ll have to strengthen your nails first before going for a bare mani. Apart from practicing a healthy diet and drinking enough water every day, invest in a nail serum to pamper your cuticles.

Don’t forget to nourish the skin surrounding your nails, too! A hydrating hand cream will do wonders to dry hands and brittle nails.

If going completely bare isn’t your thing, look for a nail-fortifying formula that you can use as a protective base coat. We also suggest swapping out your emery board for a glass nail file instead to avoid nail breakage.

As far as nail polish goes, opt for sheer and breathable formulas in pinkish nude hues. The closer it looks to your natural nail color, the better!
