The next time you’re feeling too lazy to clean your makeup brushes, you might want to read this cautionary tale. Neglecting to clean your brushes can pose serious consequences—one influencer recently learned this hard way!

The aforementioned influencer is 22-year-old British-Filipina Louaira Dela Cruz (@louaira), who posted a video five days ago explaining why she hasn’t been posting much on her feed recently.

“Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet because my skin’s flared up. Don’t know what it is. Doctor’s don’t know what it is,” she said before revealing the circular rashes on her face, which, according to her, looked like burn marks.

One user commented on her video, “That is ringworm. How do the [doctors] not know [that?] Wow.”

Contrary to popular belief, ringworm is not caused by a worm, but rather a fungus. The reason why it's called “ringworm” is due to the easily distinguishable circular rash that appears on the affected area.

Louaira continued to document the development of the rash on TikTok, and in each new video, it just seemed to get worse. Until finally, she was able to confirm that it was in fact ringworm.

“So guys, skin update. I know sharing is caring, but best believe I’m never letting anyone touch my makeup brushes, or my sponges, or any form of makeup again because this is ringworm,” she said.

She continued on to say, “If you’re going to take anything from this video: Go clean your makeup brushes. Sponges. All of them.”

In her most recent skin update, her skin seemed to be doing a lot better thanks to the antifungal medication prescribed to her.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the fungus that causes ringworm does not only spread on skin. It can also be transferred onto surfaces and household items, and yes, that includes makeup brushes.

Needless to say, don't make the same mistake. Like Louaira warned,  make it a habit to clean your makeup brushes regularly and avoid sharing your products with others. Your skin will definitely thank you.
