Here's why your skin condition isn't improving regardless of all the products you've been trying out!

Have you been religiously following your skincare routine day and night only to notice that your skin condition isn't improving or is even getting worse? That could only mean two things: You’re either using the wrong skincare products, or your skincare isn't as hygienic as you think.

Just like makeup, skincare products also have hygiene rules and practices to follow. Some of them are common sense, and some you might not even be aware of. Luckily, you came to the right page!

Ahead, we list all the ways you might be ruining your skincare and how to keep your beauty products effective and bacteria-free!

1. Leaving your beauty products uncovered

We’ve all done this. It’s probably the most common skincare hygiene mistake we make. You probably think it’s harmless, but it’s the easiest way to let bacteria and fungi into your products, especially when you leave them open in a humid area like your bathroom. There’s a reason why products always have those “store in a cool and dry area” labels. And if you don’t have a cool and dry area to store it in, at the very least, make sure to close it tightly.

2. Double-dipping into your cream products

Your fingers are a great way to introduce bacteria into your skincare so avoid double dipping into your products. Yes, most skin care products contain preservatives that help stop bacteria and fungi from spreading in your skincare. But preservatives can only do so much especially if you use the product often. Opt for skincare products with a pump, or invest in a skincare spatula or spoon.

3. Exposing products to sunlight

Sunlight isn’t just damaging to your skin. It can ruin your skincare, too. When your skincare is exposed to sunlight, the ingredients break down faster, rendering your skincare less effective or entirely useless. That’s why some skincare products come in in dark or opaque packaging. But even with dark packaging, you should still keep it away from direct sunlight, more so if they’re in clear, transparent containers.

4. Letting the tip of the dropper touch your face

When using skincare products with droppers, such as serums and oils, don’t let the dropper touch your face. It’s the same idea as double dipping with your fingers. Once the dropper touches your face, bacteria is carried by the dropper and right into the middle of your skincare. The worst part is the dropper sits there most of the time, allowing bacteria to settle in.

5. Sharing jar products

We know “sharing is caring,” but some things are best kept to yourself. This is particularly true for makeup products that come in jars. If you shouldn’t be double-dipping into your own jar products, then others shouldn’t either. Again, use a spoon or a spatula for this. But when it comes to products in pumps or bottles (but still taking into consideration their skin type and concerns), then by all means feel free to share!
