Want ultra-hydrating skin? Give "skin flooding" a chance.

One of the main reasons our skin may look dull in the summer is dehydration from the intense heat. While drinking eight glasses of water is a must, sometimes it’s not enough to give our skin that extra oomph that it needs.

If you want to maintain that dewy, plump, and youthful glow all summer round, you need to try this viral skincare trend called “skin flooding.”

What Is Skin Flooding?

If you’re a beauty junkie, you’ve probably come across the term “slugging.” It’s when you slather a thick layer of an occlusive substance such as petroleum jelly or snail cream onto your face and let it sit overnight. Sounds kind of icky, doesn’t it? Well, don’t worry—that’s not what skin flooding is about.

Despite its name, skin flooding doesn’t mean literally “flooding” your skin with moisturizer or any kind of product. It’s about strategically layering your beauty products to ensure that you’re getting the most benefits out of them and then locking in your skin's moisture. Read on to learn how.

How to Do Skin Flooding

Skin flooding isn’t anything new. It just so happens that the internet finally gave the technique a name and discovered the best way to reap its benefits.

1. Start with a gentle cleanser.

Any good skincare routine starts with a clean base. Use a gentle cleanser such as Cerave’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser. It contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid that repairs the skin’s barrier and helps lock in moisture, leaving your skin clean but not stripped.

2. Leave your skin damp.

After rinsing, you’ll want to leave your skin damp. Not dripping wet, just damp. This is the most essential step as it supposedly helps lock in moisture more effectively as you move on to the next steps.

3. Start layering your skincare from thinnest to thickest consistency .

Once your skin is nice and damp, begin layering your skincare products starting with the thinnest consistency such as a toner, mist, or essence.

Follow this up with any water-based serum you may have. We suggest using something that contains hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or niacinamide. Avoid anything that contains alcohol, retinol, glycolic acid, or benzoyl peroxide. And only limit your layering to a maximum of four products.

Finally, lock in those layers with an emollient or a moisturizer. Shea butter, vitamin E, ceramides, and silicones are great for locking in hydration without leaving that heavy, gross feeling.

Take note that all skin types can benefit from skin flooding. Those with dry skin can add this to their daily nighttime routine, while those with oily, acne-prone skin should limit the frequency to only once or twice a week.
