Looking for skincare advice?

We must admit that social media has tempted us to do a variety of things to our faces and skin, such as DIY skincare, beauty hacks, and enhancements. Now, skincare has always been a complicated subject, which is why, before experimenting with new ingredients and treatments, a certified dermatologist should be consulted.

If you need more advice, we asked seven board-certified dermatologists what they would never do to their skin. Their responses can assist you the next time you're befuddled by beauty ideas and concerns. Read on!

READ: 7 Dermatologists Share What They Would Never Do to Their Skin

1. Never use DIY skincare.

"One thing I would never do to my skin/body is to use kitchen items like lemon, baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and etc as home remedies for skin concerns." - Dr. Meg Sison, Board-Certified Dermatologist

2. Never go to sleep with makeup on.

"Sleeping with makeup on is a big no-no. I make sure to cleanse my face with mild cleanser before going to bed. Cosmetics when not remove can clog pores and may cause acne breakouts." - Dr. Lovelyn Daet, Board-Certified Dermatologist

3. Never have anything done in a shady establishment and uncertified person.

"As far as skin or body procedures go, I would never say never (you never know), BUT I would NEVER have anything done in a shady establishment or by an uncertified person. Be it a tattoo, body piercing, surgery, skin treatment, or injectables such as botox or fillers. I have seen far too many complications that occured because some patients chose to cut costs and go to a cheaper, shady alternative. Going to someone who is certified or has a license ensures that you are in safe hands because professionals will always protect their license and prioritize safety of their clients and patients." - Dr. Coreen Copuyoc-Sampedro, Board-Certified Dermatologist

4. Never go out without sunscreen.

5. Never put oil when tanning.

"I would never put oil and go tanning. As dermatologists are modern day vampires, I would actually never go tanning after all the skin cancers I've seen. In my head oil plus sun equals fried. I would never put oil on my skin then go tanning. The oil potentiates the energy of the sun, “frying” my skin in the process. Use sunscreen instead and enjoy your day out in the sun." - Dr. Riza Milante, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist

6. Never use homemade skincare.

"One thing I will never do to my skin is to use homemade DIY skincare. Using kitchen ingredients such as fruits as skincare may be convenient but it is not properly formulated. This can cause irritation & damage to the skin. Better to invest on properly formulated skincare products to address skin concerns." - Jarische Lao-Ang, Board-Certified Dermatologist

7. Never get permanent makeup.

"In general, I am open to try new products or procedures for the skin and body, but I don’t see myself getting permanent makeup (that includes eyebrow tattoos). But to each his/her own! If it makes life more convenient for some people, then why not. I just don’t see myself doing it.

But my main issue about it is, I don’t like the permanency of it. There are skin changes as we age (sagging, soft tissue distribution, etc.) and the permanent tattoo might look distorted and weird "
