When we hear of cologne, we often think of perfumes for men. But the truth is, the origin of the term has nothing to do with the gender of fragrance. It actually comes from the German city, Cologne, where the light scent formulation was created.
What's the difference between colognes and perfumes?
What sets cologne apart from eau de toilettes (EDT) and eau de parfums (EDP) is the concentration of perfume oils to water/alcohol. Unlike an EDT that has around 5 to 15% oil concentration, an eau de cologne—or cologne—has only 2 to 4% and a high amount of alcohol.
Because cologne has more alcohol, it means the fragrance is more likely to evaporate and "lose its scent" within a few hours compared to other forms of fragrances. However, that doesn’t mean that colognes aren’t fragrant at all! The formulation only affects the longevity of the scent, which will be no issue if you love reapplying your cologne anyway.
