Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you’ve already come across the Asoka trend on your feed. It’s the latest beauty trend to hit our screens, showcasing not only cool makeup looks but also transition and editing skills that seem almost impossible to recreate. But where did the idea of the Asoka trend come from anyway?
What is the Asoka Trend?
Asoka is an iconic 2001 Hindi film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor. It’s a fictional period drama that showcases fashion and beauty looks inspired by ancient India.

Some key characteristics include bold eye makeup, geometric patterns on the face and body, and vibrant Indian clothing paired with gold jewelry. All of these elements have become focal points of the TikTok trend. Creators film themselves transitioning to the beat of 'San Sanana,’ a song from the movie, from barefaced to a full Indian bridal-inspired look.
The trend isn’t limited to those of Indian descent. Pinay content creator Lenie Aycardo also hopped on the trend, amassing millions of views and likes and making the trend viral in the Philippines. Other content creators with different cultural backgrounds are also partaking in the trend, with many adding their own local twists. Pinay celebrities Ivana Alawi and Marian Rivera, for example, have put their own unique spins on the trend as well.
Local Celebrities Who Put Their Own Twist on the Asoka Trend
Ivana Alawi opted for a more traditional Filipina twist to the Asoka trend by transitioning into a Maria Clara-esque look. Instead of a bold Indian makeup look, she stuck with the classic Pinay beauty queen glam and wore a modern terno complete with a pamaypay or hand fan. She also used Angeline Quinto’s ‘Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas’ as her transition song.
Marian Rivera gave us a major throwback by transitioning into her iconic 2007 character Marimar, complete with flushed skin, wavy hair, and a sea shell top. The video, which she uploaded on Instagram, gained over 5.2 million views and more than 300,000 likes overnight.
Alex Gonzaga, on the other hand, went the more comedic route. Her mom Pinty even made a guest appearance adding in on the fun.
