Next to diamonds, makeup is every girl’s best friend. But the world of makeup can be a daunting place to explore. There are tons of different products for every nook and corner of your face, that and a number of beauty techniques to master and include. Plus, the slang you must know to be kept in the loop. So consider this your Beauty 101. Here are 15 beauty jargon every beauty junkie must know:
Bake
Letting layered translucent powder sit on your face for a few minutes. Your body heat will help the product “melt” into a flawless finish.

Strobing
While contouring focuses on the hollows of your face, strobing puts emphasis on where light would naturally hit your face.
On fleek
This word is a variation of the word flick pertaining to perfectly groomed brows. It is also used to describe perfectly winged liner.
Naked
No, this doesn’t mean going bare faced. Naked is another term for the no makeup makeup look. Let’s be honest, the latter is such a mouthful.
Buff
Basically, this just means evening out your makeup over your face using a brush.
Tightline
Tightlining is applying your eyeliner along your upper and lower waterline. The closer your liner is to your waterline, the more natural it looks. Just be careful not to poke your eye out!
Dupes
Dupes are products that are quite similar to the original but cheaper in price. Remember that dupes are different from fake products!
FOTD
Face of the Day is a photo of the eye makeup, lip, and face products you used for the day.
Beat/the Beatdown
This is a term popularized by the drag community which just basically means you slayed your makeup to perfection. Like so: Girl, your face is beat! Did you post an FOTD? I wanna know what products you used.
Haul
A large amount of products all bought at the same time. For example, Kylie Jenner’s Sephora haul.
Nontouring
The Kardashians taught us how to contour (and from it stemmed a thousand ways to do it) and then supermodels Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner gave us pointers how to find the light through strobing. Now, we have nontouring, a beauty technique that sits in between the two former makeup methods. Nontouring is softer than contouring and adds a sun-kissed glow to your regular strobing.
Foil
Foiling is an eye makeup technique where you use a wet brush in applying loose eyeshadow pigments to create a more opaque and vibrant metallic finish.
Bleed
Bleeding means the smudging of your lipstick outside your lips. A way to prevent this is to use a lipliner to define and fill in your pout. It's an effective way to prime your lips before applying your lipstick.
Multi-masking
Facemasks have always been our secret to flawless skin. But we don’t have a singular skin type, thus multi-masking allows you to layer different masks to cater to specific skin needs.
Swatch
This is a term for testing out makeup shades on your skin to show the pigments and texture when applied.
